A species of parasitic protozoa causing entamoebiasis and amebic dysentery. Humans are infected by ingesting cysts, most often through food or water contaminated with human fecal material. In most infected humans, the symptoms of "amoebiasis" are intermittent and mild. In more severe cases the gastrointestinal tract hemorrhages, resulting in dysentery and possibly death. As with most of the amoebae, infections of E. histolytica are often diagnosed by demonstrating cysts or trophozoites in a stool sample.
