In the uppermost part of the calyx, the stamens with emerging pollen are visible, and, further down, the female part of the flower (the pistil) is visible as a green ball on a long stem. At the very bottom of the flower base is the ovary, in which the seeds ripen after fertilization. Primroses are used as medicinal plants because of their high saponin content in the leaves and roots. Herbal tea and juices from it are used as expectorant in colds and chronic bronchitis.
