South Africa, Zulu Boys Dance Costumes, 1840s
Dabiyaki and Upapazi, Zulu boys in their dance costumes. In a typical Zulu dance large and high steps and jumps are made, and is hard and rhythmically pounded on the ground. The dancers stand in a line. Hands are piled high, often decorated with weapons and shields. George French Angas (April 25, 1822 - October 4, 1886) was an English explorer and painter. In 1846 Angas went to South Africa, where he spent two years in Natal and the Cape, working on a series of drawings and watercolors which were published in 1849 as The Kafirs Illustrated.
