South Africa, Zulu Kraal, 1840s
The term kraal primarily refers to the type of dispersed homestead characteristic of the Nguni-speaking peoples of southern Africa. Although from the period of colonization, European South Africans and historians commonly referred to the entire settlement as a kraal. Folds for animals and enclosures made specially for defensive purposes are also called kraals. George French Angas (April 25, 1822 - October 4, 1886) was an English explorer and painter. In 1846 Angas went to South Africa, where he spent two years in Natal and the Cape, working on a series of drawings and watercolors which were published in 1849 as The Kafirs Illustrated.
