Miller was born at Ipswich, and took an early interest in science. he was apprenticed to a surgeon before studying medicine at King's College London. His knowledge of chemistry impressed, and his distaste for surgery led him to become a chemistry assistant. He became most interested in spectroscopy, comparing spectra of chemicals seen on Earth from flames and electric sparks to those seen from the light of distant stars. With William Huggins he published an analyzed spectra on 40 stars, showing their composition to be of elements found on Earth.
