This design was part of work carried out in the 1980s and 1990s by Deutsche Aerospace based on designs by Austrian-German engineer Eugen Saenger (1905-1964). The Saenger spaceplane is carrying the smaller HORUS (Hypersonic Orbital Reusable Upper Stage) space shuttle. This system was designed to provide an inexpensive method of launching astronauts and cargo into space. Powered by jet engines, it would take off from a normal runway, climb to separation altitude, and release the HORUS which would use rockets to propel itself into orbit.Credit:Detlev van Ravenswaay / Science SourceSize:5156px × 3437px (~50 MB)Restrictions:No Sale through SubagentsGet PricingHow Will The Visual Be Used?ShareKeywords:1-1900s-1980s-1990s-20th century-aircraft-art-ascending-ascent-astronauts-atmosphere-austrian-C011/6924-C0116924-crescent moon-delta wing-deutsche aerospace-earth-earth orbit-earth's limb-edge of space-engineering-eugen saenger-europe-german-german hypersonics program-glider-high altitude-history-horus-hypersonic orbital reusable upper stage-hypersonic technology program-ii-jet engine-jet engines-launch-launching-limb-margaret sanger-mbb-messerschmidt-boelkow-bloehm-moon-one-orbiter-saenger ii-sanger ii-separation altitude-single-sky-spacecraft-spaceflight-spaceplane-stage-stages-technology-transport-turbo ramjet-two-partFolder Legacy Identifier:spl001_hdModel release:N/AParent folder:SPL bulkload #12
