Richard Shaboe Doll (1912-2005), British physiologist, with a graph from his study on the mortality associated with cigarette smoking. Doll was a pioneer of studies linking smoking to health problems, publishing a report in 1950 that showed that the risk of lung cancer was up to 50 times greater among heavy smokers compared to non-smokers. Doll, one of the leading epidemiologists of the 20th century, also investigated causes of leukemia, asbestos and breast cancer. He received numerous awards for his work, and was knighted in 1971.
