Resin cast of the adult human lower trachea & bronchial tree. The bronchi have been colored orange & their main branches in a range of colors in order to separate them. The bronchial tree conducts air to & from the lungs through a system of tubes. These tubes become increasingly smaller as they get deeper into the lungs, finally culminating in alveolar sacs. It is across these thin-walled sacs that gaseous exchange takes place; oxygen passing to the blood & carbon dioxide into the lungs for expiration.
