Queen Nefertari lived around 1300-1255 BC and was the first wife of the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II. This wall painting is found in her tomb and portrays the Queen in the afterlife playing the board game senet. In Egpytian mythology, the dead must overcome several tests, such as winning senet, to pass through the afterlife. Senet is the oldest known board game. Players move pawns on a grid of thirty squares. The actual rules are not known. The tomb of Nefertari is located in the Valley of the Queens, Thebes, Egypt. It is one of the best preserved and most ornately decorated of all known tombs. It was rediscovered in 1904 by the Italian archaeologist Ernesto Schiaparelli, but has been closed to the public since 2003.Credit:Patrick Landmann / Science SourceSize:5198px × 3425px (~50 MB)Restrictions:No Sale through SubagentsGet PricingHow Will The Visual Be Used?ShareKeywords:1255 bc-13th century bc-2nd millennium bc-afterlife-ancient egypt-ancient world-antiquity-archeology-architecture-board game-boardgame-book of the dead-burial chamber-burial site-burial tomb-cemetery-classical-E905/0410-E905/410-E9050410-egyptian queen-egyptian royalty-egyptology-fresco-funerary-game-game playing-glyph-hieroglyph-hieroglyphics-hieroglyphs-history-icon-luxor-mural-nefertari-painting-queen nefertari-qv66-ramasses ii-rameses-ramesses-ramesses ii-ramsses ii-royalty-senet-subterranean-symbol-symbols-theban necropolis-thebes-tomb-underworld-valley of the queensModel release:N/AParent folder:Months of June through August 2008
