Paleontologist Malvina Lak, from the University of Rennes, France, holding an enlarged model of a fossil ant created on a 3-D inkjet printer. The ant was found in 100-million-year-old opaque amber (fossilized conifer plant resin) and X-rayed at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France. The X-rays here are one thousand billion times brighter than hospital X-rays and can image the interior of opaque amber samples at high resolution. Multiple scans of the sample creates virtual 'slices' that can be reconstructed into 3-D computer models or printed into physical models. 3-D inkjet printers create models by glueing fine powder layer by layer.Credit:Pascal Goetgheluck / Science SourceSize:5388px × 3666px (~56 MB)Restrictions:No Sale through SubagentsGet PricingHow Will The Visual Be Used?ShareKeywords:100 million years old-3d inkjet-3d inkjet printer-3-d inkjet printer-3-d inkjet printing-3-d lithography-3d model-3-d model-3d print-3d printer-3-d printer-3d printing-3-d printing-adult-amber fossil-animal-ant-biology-caucasian-E442/0756-E4420756-enlargement-europe-european synchrotron radiation-facility-female-formicidae-fossil amber-fossil invertebrate-fossilized-fossils-france-french-grenoble-holding-human-inclusion-inkjet printing-insect-invertebrates-lab-malvina lak-mid-cretaceous-model-paleontologist-paleontology-prehistory-rapid prototyper-rapid prototyping-researcher-scientist-womanFolder Legacy Identifier:spl001_hdModel release:Not releasedParent folder:SPL bulkload #7
