An organ is a musical instrument that is operated by an organist using a keyboard and pedals. This is a pipe organ, and the pressing of a key opens one end of a pipe, allowing air under pressure to flow through the pipe, producing a continuous and constant sound. The pitch and timbre of the sounds produced depend on the length, size and material of the pipes, as well as the combination of pipes used. Large organs like this one have many pipes (not seen) surrounding this console area. The combination of pipes used are selected using controls called stops (seen on the side walls of the console). The large pedals and other keyboard controls can switch between pre-set combinations of pipes. This is a Harrison and Harrison console.
