Light micrograph (LM) of a section through a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) the most common type of primary liver cancer. Hepatocellular carcinoma occurs most often in people with chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection. The vast majority of HCC occurs in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, in countries where hepatitis B infection is endemic and many are infected from birth. The incidence of HCC in developing countries is increasing due to an increase in hepatitis C virus infections. It is more common in male than females for unknown reasons. The usual outcome is poor, because only 10äón20% of hepatocellular carcinomas can be removed completely using surgery. If the cancer cannot be completely removed, the disease is usually fatal within 3 to 6 months.
