Lewis Boss (1846-1912), US astronomer. Boss started his career as a clerk for the US government, and also participated in a government survey of the US-Canada border. In 1876, he was appointed director of the Dudley Observatory, Union University, New York, USA. In 1882, he led an expedition to Chile to observe a transit of Venus. Boss also worked on star catalogs and comets. His awards include the 1905 Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. From 1909 until his death, Boss was editor of the Astronomical Journal, one of the world's leading astronomy journals. This image is from volume 20 (1912) of the US magazine Popular Astronomy.
