The Kern Primrose Sphinx Moth, Euproserpinus euterpe, is federally listed as threatened. This species is not protected under California law because California does not list insects. The moth is found in only two localities, Carrizo Plain National Monument, and in the east end of the Cuyama Valley, both of which are in central California. The adult moths have a short flight period in late February and early March. The females lay their eggs on or near Camissonia contorta, also called Sun Cup, a member of the Evening Primrose Family, Onagraceae. This species of Camissonia is the only food plant of the larvae. The moth is threatened due to loss of habitat from farming and grazing. Also, collectors have an interest in this insect because it is a member of the Sphinx family. Though collecting is illegal, the moth has a high value to unscrupulous collectors.
