Description: Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Formosan (subterranean) worker termite head (Coptotermes formosanus). The Formosan subterranean termite (Coptotermes formosanus) is a subterranean termite in the family Rhinotermitidae. It is an invasive species of termite and has been distributed worldwide from its native range in southern China to Japan. The Formosan subterranean termite (FST) is know as the super-termite because of its destructive habits. It produces large sized colonies, and the termites can consume wood at a very rapid rate. A single colony may contain several million individuals that forage up to 300 yards in soil. Due to its population size and foraging range the presence of a colony poses serious threats to nearby structures. Magnification: x11 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimeters.
