Woman's arm bandaged after contraceptive implant
Description:
Contraceptive implant surgery. A woman's arm being bandaged after six contraceptive implants were inserted under the skin. The bandage will be removed within a week. Here, Norplant implants were surgically placed under skin of the inner arm, in a fan-pattern. Local anaesthetic was used on the area during the procedure. The implants are small tubes filled with female hormone. They are designed to give a 5-year sustained release of hormone into the blood, providing a method of long term birth control for women. Fertility returns soon after the implants are removed. This method may also be suitable for women who are unable to use oral contraceptives.
