Sunspot formation, artwork
Description:
Sunspot formation. Computer artworks and diagrams showing how the solar magnetic field (white lines) entangles as the Sun rotates at different speeds at higher latitudes. The faster spin at the poles leaves the field lines lagging behind in the equatorial regions. After many rotations the field lines entangle and begin to buckle and twist. It is these regions that give rise to sunspots (dark areas) and their associated magnetic activity.
