Slime Mold Myxamoeba
Description:
Colored scanning electron micrograph of a slime mold (Lycogala sp.) myxamoeba. This type of slime mold is a plasmodial species. The myxamoeba is a haploid, single-celled, free-living phase of this organism's life cycle. Pairs of these myxamoebae will swarm together and fuse to form one large, multinucleated cell called a plasmodium. The plasmodium moves slowly, feeding on fungi and bacteria until it begins to form spore producing fruiting bodies. Magnification is x6500 at 6x6cm.
