Description:
Julia Hurlbut leading 16 members of the NWP who participated in the picketing demonstration in front of the White House. Iris Calderhead, at right, waiting for mobs to attack so she can order out new banners. These women were arrested and sent to the Occoquan Workhouse on July 14, 1917. Although many could have paid the $25 dollar fine, they chose prison sentences on principle and in defense of civil liberties. In 1919 she was part of the "Prison Tour" where the women spoke publicly, distributed literature, and sold the Suffragist. International Film Service, 1917 (cropped and cleaned).
