Settlement sits above a bay filled with sea ice
Description:
Frozen bay. View of a settlement standing above a bay filled with sea ice. The frozen bay is the flat, snow-covered area at right. This long, narrow inlet has an extremely high tidal range of around 10 metres. This creates huge forces in the ice leading to broken ice and pressure ridges around the tide zone. Ice cliffs can be seen on the far side of the bay (at far right). The settlement is Kimmirut, an Inuit (Eskimo) village. Photographed in Glasgow Bay on Baffin Island, Northwest Territories, Canada. Baffin Island lies within the Arctic Circle.
