Ribbon seal pup
Description:
Ribbon seal pup, Histriophoca fasciata, on sea ice of the Bering Sea, April. This is the least known seal of the arctic-subarctic, which breeds on sea ice and is subject to diminishing sea ice due to global climate change. After only about 4 weeks of nursing, the pup is left on its own and must learn to swim and feed rapidly before the sea ice melts and moves north.
