Description: Radiolarian [Protists: Rhizaria, Radiolaria, Legion NASSELLARIA, Order CYRTOIDEA, Family Lithocampida (Haeckel)]. Radiolaria, also called Radiozoa, are protozoa that produce intricate mineral skeletons made of silica, typically with a central capsule dividing the cell into the inner and outer portions of endoplasm and ectoplasm. They are found as zooplankton throughout the ocean, and their skeletal remains, or tests, make up a large part of the cover of the ocean floor as siliceous ooze. This specimen originates from a Deep Sea probe in the Southern Atlantic Ocean made by AWI Bremerhaven and is probably recent. Scanning electron microscope, magnification 940:1 (when 15cm wide).
