Quartz in sphalerite. Quartz crystals (white) surrounded by sphalerite (dark bands) in their host rock (grey). Quartz is a form of silica (silicon dioxide) that is colorless and transparent when pure. Sphalerite is the chief ore of zinc. It consists largely of zinc sulphide in crystalline form but almost always contains variable amounts of iron.
