Portrait of Alan Cormack
Description:
Alan Cormack (b.1924), South African physicist and Nobel Laureate. Cormack graduated at the University of Cape Town, then went to research nuclear medicine in Johannesburg. In 1956 he moved to the USA. In 1963, he published mathematical principles for the X-ray imaging of soft biological tissue by combining views from different directions. This allowed a 'slice' through the body, including soft tissue, to be produced. The process, X-ray tomography, was the basis for the Computer-Assisted Tomography (CAT) scanners now regularly used in many hospitals. This invaluable advance in medical imaging won Cormack the 1979 Nobel Prize for Medicine.
