Description: Polar bears. View of a mother polar bear (Ursus maritimus) leading her ten month old cubs over land-fast ice. A fully grown polar bear can weight up to 700 kg and have a body length of 2.5 meters. They are solitary animals, meeting only to mate. The mother is then responsible for the infants. Pregnant polar bears dig a den out of ice on land. During the bear's winter rest (not true hibernation), between 1 and 3 cubs are born. The mother nurses her cubs in the den, and they do not emerge until the spring. The young nurse for around a year and a half. They mainly eat seals and fish. Photographed in Cape Churchill, Hudson Bay, Manitoba, Canada.
