Otoscopy exam
Description:
Otoscopy examination. Doctor using an otoscope to examine the external auditory canal in the ear of a baby. The otoscope comprises a handle, which contains a power source; the head, which contains a light bulb and a magnifying lens; and the cone, which is inserted into the ear canal. The doctor uses this instrument to check the health of the ear canal and the ear drum (tympanic membrane). Most otoscopes have small air vents through which the doctor can puff air. This process, called insufflation, allows the doctor to see whether the eardrum moves correctly. Abnormal findings of otoscopy may include eczema, inflammation, excess wax or a foreign object.
