Description: Light micrograph of cells in the epidermis of an onion, Allium sp. . The speckled cell at centre is undergoing mitosis (cell division). The darkly- stained filaments are the cell's chromosomes, which have condensed and been released from the nucleus prior to division. The remaining cells are in interphase (between divisions) and carry their DNA within the central nucleus (deep pink spot). Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
