Oak Leaf Hairs

Description: Colored scanning electron micrograph of the hairs on the underside of an Evergreen or Holm oak (Quercus ilex) leaf . The hairs or trichomes help to reduce water loss and protect the tree from pests. Quercus ilex is native to old forested areas of the Mediterranean region and southwest Europe. Forests of mature Holm Oaks are becoming rare due to human activities. Magnification is x170 at 6x6cm.
