Movement of Midnight Sun & Transit of Venus, 2012
Description:
The exotic motion of the midnight sun along the northern horizon is visible above the Norwegian Sea in this multi-exposure image from northern Norway. The beginning the June 6, 2012 transit of Venus is also visible, with Venus appearing as a black dot on the solar disc. At this latitude (69 degrees north) the sun does not set throughout the months of June and July, gliding close to the northern horizon but never sinking beneath it. The transit of Venus is a rare celestial phenomenon, occuring only twice in each century; the 2012 transit was the last of our time. The next transit happens in the year 2117.
