Mesothelioma cancer, light micrograph
Description:
Lung cancer cells. Light micrograph of cells from a mesothelioma, a cancerous lung tumour caused by the inhalation of asbestos dust. The tumour has both fibrous (pink bands) and glandular (spaces) components. Mesotheliomas develop on the pleural membrane outside the lungs, forming a hard shell that covers the lungs. Mesothelioma may be symptomless or may cause coughs, chest pains and breathing difficulties. It rarely spreads beyond the lungs, but unless it is diagnosed early, the prognosis is poor. Magnification unknown.
