Mary I (1516-1558) was Queen of England and Ireland from 1553-58. During her five year reign, she had over 280 religious dissenters burned at the stake in the Marian Persecutions. Her Protestant opponents gave her the sobriquet of "Bloody Mary." Engraving from 1834 by Emile Desmaisons (1812-1880). Colorized.
