Description: Martian landscape. Mars Express perspective view of a crater (upper center) in the Solis Planum (Solis Plain) region of Mars. This view looks to the south-east. The crater is about 10 kilometers across. Such craters are formed by ancient impacts by asteroids. There is very little geological activity on Mars, which is a cold desert world, but past activity caused fracturing and rumpling of the crust, as seen here. Data from the High Resolution Stereo Camera. Mars Express has been orbiting Mars since December 2003.
