Male Balanced Translocation Karyotype
Description:
Male balanced translocation 10/11 (46, XY, t 10/11). This karyotype came from a phenotypically normal male, genetic material has been exchanged (translocated) between chromosomes 10 and 11. This results in a balanced translocation where the same total amount of genetic material is present and the individual is therefore normal. At meiosis in the formation of gametes the four chromosomes will pair forming a cross and there are three different ways in which they can segregate. As a result, after the second meiotic division there are six possible types of gametes, only two of which are balanced (one contains the two normal chromosomes, the other the 'original' translocation like the parent). All the other gametes would give rise to abnormal individuals since a large chuck of genetic material is absent.
