Description: Painting for the cover of 'Time' magazine in 1938 showing Charles Lindbergh (left) and Alexis Carrel with their perfusion pump. Lindbergh (1902- 1974) gained world fame as the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The flight from New York to Paris, on 20-21 May 1927, lasted over 33 hours. Lindbergh became a US hero overnight. Carrel (1873-1944) was a French-American surgeon. His work in pioneering suture techniques for blood vessels won him the 1912 Nobel Prize for medicine. Lindbergh and Carrel worked together in the early 1930s to design and build this pump, essentially a germ-proof machine for maintaining blood flow to an excised organ during transplant surgery.
