Description: Leptis Magna region, GeoEye-1 satellite image. North is at top. The ruins of the Roman city of Leptis Magna (upper center) are a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Mediterranean coast of Libya, 130 kilometers east of Tripoli. The city existed from around 1100 BC to around the 7th century AD, reaching its peak in the 2nd century AD. Fields are seen at lower right, and modern buildings and roads at lower left. Image data obtained on July 4th, 2009. The US-operated GeoEye-1 satellite was launched in September 2008, and orbits at a height of 680 kilometers. It is the world's highest resolution commercial Earth-imaging satellite.
