Lenticular Galaxy, NGC 4753
Description:
NGC 4753 is an unusual lenticular galaxy of type S0(pec), in the constellation Virgo. Although the underlying galaxy is smooth and nearly elliptical, the irregular dust lanes are not common. NGC 4753 is surrounded by an unusual network of dust filaments. They are visible because they absorb the light of the galaxy's stars. They may be the remnants of a smaller galaxy which was absorbed in a collision. NGC 4753 is in the Virgo Cluster of galaxies, about 50 million light-years away. KPNO 4-meter Mayall telescope, 1975.
