Johann Polizsch (b.1723), German farmer and amateur astronomer. Polizsch was the first to sight Halley's comet on Christmas Day in 1758. Edmund Halley, the English astronomer, had predicted the orbit of the comet to be 76 years in 1692. The comet will next pass close to the Earth in 2061.
