Icebergs
Description:
Icebergs. Icebergs are floating chunks of ice that have broken away from an ice sheet or a glacier. The horizontal layers seen at the top of the iceberg at right show seasonal snowfall that has become compacted when fresh snow falls. These layers are analogous to tree rings, making it possible to calculate periods of time. Analysis of ice cores along with these time scales allow scientists to investigate trends such as climate change and atmospheric pollution. Photographed in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica.
