Historical artwork of the constellation of Aries
Description:
Aries. Coloured historical artwork of the constellation of Aries. The constellation is shown as a ram. Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac. The Sun is in Aries between 21 March and 19 April. It is an important yet faint constellation. When the zodiac was devised, the point at which the Sun's path, the ecliptic (black and red line), crossed the celestial equator lay in Aries, hence it is the first sign. Due to the movement of the Earth, this point has since moved into Pisces, at right. This artwork is based on a sky map by the Polish-German astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611- 1687), which was published posthumously in 1690.
