Genetics, Inactive X Chromosome, Drumstick, LM
Description:
Color enhanced Light micrograph (LM) of a white blood cell of a human female showing the drumstick (X chromosome at center). Drumsticks usually appear when two XX chromosomes are present. Women have drumsticks in 3% or more of the polymorphonuclear leukocytes. The active X chromosome is randomly distributed within nuclear lobes, but the inactive X preferentially appears in drumsticks. Typical drumsticks are rarely seen in normal men. There is specific structure to the inactive x chromosome, in somatic cells (body cell) they are Barr bodies. In neutorphils/leucoytes they are appear as drumsticks. Magnification unknown.
