Francis Joseph Victor Broussais (1772-1821), French doctor. He believed that most diseases were due to inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, and prescribed a lean diet and blood-letting with leeches as a cure. His view was so popular that during 1833 over 4 million medicinal leeches were imported into France.
