Field research into source of Ebola virus
Description:
Testing a bat for Ebola virus. Researchers with an unidentifed bat captured for Ebola virus testing. This is part of research sponsored by the World Health Organization into the source of Ebola outbreaks. An unknown host is thought to carry the virus, acting as a reservoir for sporadic transmission to humans. Bats are one of the few known non-primate species that can carry the virus. Some species can be infected without suffering the severe symptoms experienced by infected humans and other primates. Bat feces is thought to be a possible route of infection. Photographed in the Tai Forest, Ivory Coast, Africa.
