False-colour SEM of a taste bud on tongue surface
Description:
Taste bud. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the apical part of a taste bud (pink at centre), known as a gustatory caliculus, on the dorsal surface of the tongue. Taste buds are barrel-shaped organs which extend throughout the thickness of the epithelial layer and contain the gustatory sensory cells. Each taste bud opens onto the surface through an aperture, the gustatory pore, seen here as a round dark area. Taste buds are also found in the soft palate, the epiglottis and part of the pharynx. The background is occupied by layers of stratified squamous epithelium. Magnification: x1040 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x1780 at 4x5 inch size.
