Exposed sedimentary rock face
Description:
Rock face. Exposed, smooth sedimentary rock face showing diagonal bands of various colours. The different colours are due to the presence of different types of rock. Sedimentary rock is created by the deposition of granular material at the bottom of seas or by volcanic activity. As the deposition continues, the lower layers of material become compressed into rocks. Although sedimentary rock is deposited in horizontal layers, stresses within the Earth's crust often twist the rock to different angles. The rock face has been worn smooth by glacier erosion. Photographed in New Zealand.
