Eruption of Augustine volcano, Landsat image

Description: False-colour Landsat image in visible and infrared wavelengths of the eruption of Augustine volcano, Alaska. The volcano erupted just after midnight on 27 March 1986. This image was made ten hours later by the Thematic Mapper (TM) on Landsat 5 from an altitude of 438 miles. The blue colour on the volcano indicates snow and ice, whilst the brown/grey area on the right of the island is volcanic ash. Red channels of hot pyroclastic flow are seen running north from the crater. The ash cloud is rising 11,500 metres (38,000 feet) into the atmosphere. The sea in the top right corner is covered with ash from the eruption.
