Eider duck, historical artwork
Description:
Eider duck. Historical artwork of an eider duck (Somateria mollissima). This large, fast-flying sea duck is found in coastal waters around northern Eurasia. It is highly gregarious and is often seen floating in long lines just offshore. It prefers rocky coastlines, and large groups often form mixed colonies with terns and gulls. It feeds almost exclusively on shellfish, which it takes from the seabed during dives. It may grow to over 70 centimetres in length. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935).
