Earth star mushroom
Description:
Earth star mushroom (Geastrum triplex) growing in woodland soil. It has released (puffed) a cloud of reproductive spores (upper centre). This mushroom is a fruiting body of this rare fungus that feeds on decaying vegetable matter. An earth star is a puffball mushroom. The outer wall has split open to allow dispersal of the reproductive spores from the sac inside. This mushroom is not edible.
