At the center of the Earth is the core (white), a solid ball of nickel and iron metal. Overlying that is the outer core (yellow), which comprises molten nickel and iron. Currents in this region generate the Earth's magnetic field. Overlying this layer is the mantle (orange), a thick layer of molten rock on which the plates of the crust float. The crust is a layer of solid rock that is between 10 and 70 kilometers thick.
