Description: Earth's atmosphere. Illustration showing the different layers of the Earth's atmosphere and objects and phenomena found there. Closest to Earth, extending to 15 kilometres (km), is the troposphere. Passenger planes fly here at altitudes of up to 10 km. Above this is the stratosphere, extending to 50 km, where most of the ozone layer is found. Next is the mesosphere, from 50 to 100 km. Some meteors (one shown) can penetrate this layer. Above the mesosphere is the thermosphere, where most meteors burn up and the aurora (upper right) are created. It extends to about 500 km. The outermost layer is the exosphere, which extends to about 10,000 km. Satellites (one at upper left) orbit Earth in the exosphere.
