Down's Syndrome Karyotype
Description:
Down's Syndrome karyotype. In karyotyping, chromosomes are arranged in 23 numbered pairs. In Down's syndrome (trisomy-21), the affected person has three copies of chromosome 21 in their cells, rather than the normal two. This chromosomal anomaly results in mental retardation and physical disability. Physical characteristics of someone with Down's Syndrome include a flattened face. They also have an increased risk of infection and neck damage. The condition is more prevalent in the children of older mothers.
